1. Follow official warnings before automations

Use local emergency management, the National Hurricane Center, and trusted weather alerts for watches, warnings, storm surge, evacuation zones, and return instructions. 3. Keep the sensor-led alarm path separate

Direct door and window contacts should still report to the alarm hub and local siren when Apple Home or broadband is unavailable, if the exact system supports that behavior. 4. Test cameras for outage evidence, not storm watching

Do not go outside or remain in danger to adjust a camera during severe weather. Before the storm, confirm mounting, weather rating, cable entry, drainage, field of view, privacy, night detail, timestamps, local or cloud recording, overwrite, export, and recovery. Bring in portable indoor-only or unapproved outdoor equipment when safe and permitted by the maker.

5. Locks, garage doors, gates, and safe access

Do not create an automation that locks people in or blocks evacuation. Give a trusted local responder a named, time-limited path only when it is safe and lawful.

6. Backup power and runtime

Measure the real load and runtime for the alarm hub, router, modem or gateway, Apple home hub, essential bridge, selected recorder, and communication equipment. Return and recovery

Return only after officials say it is safe. Treat standing water, damaged electrical equipment, gas odours, unstable structures, downed lines, mould, sharp debris, and animals as hazards. Do not energize wet equipment. Use qualified help where needed.

Season setup: prove the property map before a warning
