Abode is a DIY home security system built around flexibility. No contracts, free self-monitoring, optional professional monitoring starting at $6/month, and native Apple HomeKit support — the only major security system that offers it.
After testing Abode against Ring, SimpliSafe, ADT, and Cove, here is where it stands: best value for smart home users, best option for Apple households, and the most flexible monitoring structure in the industry.
| Feature | Details |
|---|---|
| Installation | DIY (15 minutes) |
| Equipment cost | $199-$399 (starter kits) |
| Monthly cost | $0 (free tier), $6 (Connect), $20 (Connect+) |
| Contract | None — all plans month-to-month |
| Professional monitoring | Optional ($6-$20/mo) |
| Self-monitoring | Free — app alerts, arm/disarm, basic automations |
| Smart home | HomeKit, Alexa, Google, Z-Wave, Zigbee, Matter |
| Cameras | Abode Cam 2 (indoor, 1080p, person detection) |
| Cellular backup | Included on Connect+ plan |
| Battery backup | Built into hub |
Every Abode plan is month-to-month. Subscribe to pro monitoring for vacation, cancel when you get home. No early termination fees, no commitment, no calls to a retention department. This is how security should work.
Abode is the only security system with native Apple HomeKit integration. That means:
Ring, SimpliSafe, ADT, Vivint, Cove — none of them support HomeKit. If you are in the Apple ecosystem, Abode is the only real option.
Beyond HomeKit, Abode works with:
No other security system covers this many protocols. SimpliSafe is a closed ecosystem. Ring only works with Alexa. Abode plays with everything.
The free plan gives you:
You do not pay a cent and the system works. Add monitoring only when you want it.
| Plan | Price | What You Get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0/mo | Self-monitoring, app alerts, basic automations |
| Connect | $6/mo | Extended timeline, full CUE automations, 10-day media, optional pro monitoring add-on |
| Connect+ | $20/mo | 24/7 professional monitoring, cellular backup, camera recording, premium support |
At $6/month, Abode Connect is the cheapest plan from any major security provider that includes automations and extended history. Connect+ at $20/month is competitive with Ring Protect Plus ($20) and cheaper than SimpliSafe Interactive ($28) or ADT ($29-$46).
The hub is compact (roughly router-sized), plugs into a wall outlet, and connects via Wi-Fi with cellular backup on paid plans. It supports Z-Wave, Zigbee, and communicates with all Abode sensors. Battery backup keeps it running during power outages.
The Abode Cam 2 is an indoor 1080p camera with person detection, two-way audio, and night vision. It integrates directly into the Abode app and can trigger CUE automations. Sold individually or in 2-packs.
Abode does not currently offer an outdoor camera or video doorbell — that is the biggest gap in their lineup. If outdoor cameras are a priority, pair Abode with third-party cameras or consider Ring for a camera-first setup.
The Abode Lock is a Z-Wave deadbolt with keypad. It integrates directly with the security system for auto-lock on arm and unlock on disarm automations.
This is Abode’s biggest weakness. Ring has 10+ camera models including the best video doorbells on the market. SimpliSafe has indoor, outdoor, and doorbell cameras. Abode only has the Cam 2 (indoor). You can use third-party cameras via HomeKit or other integrations, but native outdoor options are missing.
One indoor camera model. That is it. If camera coverage is your primary concern, Ring or SimpliSafe offer more options out of the box.
The Abode app (version 7.x as of early 2026) works but has historically been less polished than Ring or SimpliSafe. Recent updates have improved performance and added live streaming, but some users report occasional quirks with widgets and geolocation. The web interface is functional but basic.
Long-time users have noted that features previously included have moved behind paid tiers. The free plan is still usable, but advanced automations, extended history, and camera recording require Connect or Connect+.

Abode is the best DIY security system for smart home integration. No other system matches its protocol support (HomeKit, Z-Wave, Zigbee, Matter, Alexa, Google) or monitoring flexibility (free to $20/mo, no contract). The camera lineup is the main weakness — if outdoor cameras and video doorbells matter, supplement with third-party cameras or consider Ring.
For Apple users, there is no competition. Abode is the only HomeKit-compatible security system on the market. That alone makes it the default choice for millions of iPhone and Apple Watch owners.
Yes. The free tier gives you full app control, push notifications, arm/disarm, and basic automations. You do not need to pay anything for the system to function. Paid plans add history, advanced automations, camera recording, and optional professional monitoring.
Yes — Abode is the only major security system with native HomeKit support. You can arm/disarm from the Home app, Apple Watch, or Siri. Sensor data is exposed to HomeKit for cross-device automations.
Abode has broader smart home support (HomeKit, Z-Wave, Zigbee, Matter) and cheaper monitoring ($6/mo vs $20/mo). Ring has a much better camera lineup (10+ models vs 1 indoor cam) and deeper Alexa integration. Choose Abode for smart home breadth, Ring for cameras. See our Ring review for a full comparison.
Yes. Abode integrates with Home Assistant, exposing sensor activity, alarm events, and system status for advanced automations. Several long-term Abode users run it alongside HA for maximum flexibility.
Not currently. The Abode Cam 2 is indoor-only. For outdoor coverage, pair Abode with third-party cameras through HomeKit, or use a separate outdoor camera system alongside the Abode alarm.
Excellent. All sensors are wireless and adhesive-mount (no drilling). The hub plugs into a standard outlet. No contract means you are not tied to an address. When you move, peel off the sensors and reinstall at your new place in minutes.
