A smart lock is compatible only when it fits the door, throws the bolt without force, preserves the required key and exit path, works with the household’s phones and home platform, and can be removed or serviced without creating a new problem. A product page that says “fits most standard deadbolts” is a screening claim, not an installation plan.

Choose the right retrofit path

Interior-only retrofit

An interior retrofit usually keeps the outside cylinder and key while replacing the inside thumb turn with a motorized housing. It can preserve the exterior appearance and may be easier for a renter to reverse. It still needs a supported deadbolt, enough interior clearance, a compatible tailpiece, correct handing, and a bolt that moves freely.

Full smart deadbolt replacement

A full replacement swaps the exterior cylinder or keypad, latch or bolt, mounting hardware, and interior housing. It gives the manufacturer control over more of the assembly but makes fit, finish, keyway, strike, weather exposure, and owner approval more important.

Do not force a deadbolt product onto another lock format

Mortise, multipoint, rim, interconnected, narrow-stile, gate, patio, and commercial lock formats are different projects. Identify the door and lock before buying. A compatible bridge or third-party module does not make incompatible mechanical hardware safe.

1. Identify the lock and door

Photograph the outside trim, inside trim, door edge, bolt face, strike, hinges, frame, any certification labels, and the door open and closed. Record whether the door is wood, steel, fiberglass, aluminum, glass-framed, fire-rated, part of a shared entrance, or controlled by a landlord, building manager, homeowners association, strata, or insurer.

Check whether the same opening has a separate handle set, interconnected release, panic hardware, closer, screen door, storm door, security gate, or multipoint mechanism. Do not remove or disable hardware required for safe egress or a rated assembly. When the door is part of a fire boundary, shared corridor, rental, or commercial property, get written approval from the responsible authority before drilling, enlarging holes, changing the latch, or replacing the strike.

2. Measure backset, bore, and door thickness

  1. Backset: measure from the flat door edge to the center of the main lock bore. Do not measure from decorative trim or weather stripping.
  2. Cross-bore: measure the diameter of the large hole through the door. Remove hardware only if you can restore it safely.
  3. Edge-bore: measure the hole through the door edge that carries the bolt assembly.
  4. Door thickness: measure the finished door at the lock. Record any reinforcement plate or wraparound guard separately.
  5. Trim clearance: trace the proposed exterior keypad and interior housing on paper, then hold the templates in place. Check handles, glass, raised panels, trim, frame, screen door, and hand clearance.
  6. Strike depth: measure whether the bolt can extend fully into the frame without bottoming out.

Compare every measurement with the current installation sheet for the exact model and hardware revision. Do not rely on a marketplace summary, a review of an older generation, or measurements for a similar-looking model.

3. Fix door alignment before adding a motor

With the door open, extend and retract the deadbolt using one finger on the thumb turn or key. Repeat with the door closed without lifting, pushing, or pulling the slab. The effort should stay low and consistent. If the bolt rubs, binds, stops short, or needs body weight on the door, repair the door fit first.

4. Check tailpiece, handing, and mounting

The tailpiece carries rotation between the exterior cylinder and interior mechanism. Its shape, length, orientation, and permitted trim range are model-specific. An interior retrofit may support only certain tailpieces or thumb-turn positions. A full replacement may require cutting or positioning its tailpiece exactly as instructed.

Confirm left- or right-hand setup when the product requires it. The handing procedure may be physical, in-app, or automatic during calibration. Mount the plate flat without pinching cable, insulation, or weather stripping. Tighten screws evenly to the manufacturer’s torque guidance; overtightening can distort the assembly and make the motor work harder.

5. Preserve key, exit, and emergency access

Decide the backup path before installation. It may be a retained exterior key, a manufacturer-approved external power contact, a mechanical override, a staffed building process, or another documented route. Keep emergency keys accessible to an authorized person, not hidden next to the door.

Everyone inside must be able to exit as required without a phone, cloud service, voice assistant, automation, or network connection. Do not install a double-cylinder arrangement, special release, or modified fire door without qualified advice and written approval. Smart features do not override local egress, rental, fire, accessibility, or insurance requirements.

6. Get rental and building approval in writing

Renters should document the existing lock and key count, ask whether the outside appearance or keyway may change, confirm whether the owner needs a key, and agree who owns the device, codes, batteries, app account, damage, service calls, and removal. Save approval with the lease record.

For condos, apartments, and shared buildings, confirm rules for corridor-facing hardware, master-key systems, fire doors, common keys, emergency access, locksmith service, and move-out. 7. Match the radio and home platform

Mechanical fit comes first. Then record the exact connection path: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Apple Home, Matter, Thread, Z-Wave, Zigbee, a manufacturer bridge, or another hub. Confirm which features work locally, which require a bridge or subscription, which phones are supported, who owns the main account, how guests are invited, and what remains during internet or power loss.

8. Plan codes, users, and recovery

Create named access for each resident rather than sharing one household code. Give cleaners, contractors, dog walkers, and guests a separate code or invitation with the narrowest practical schedule. Keep an owner and a second recovery administrator, turn on multi-factor authentication where offered, and document who can unlock, add users, view history, change automations, reset the lock, and recover the account.

30-minute installation acceptance test

  1. Before pairing, lock and unlock manually ten times with the door open and ten times closed. Stop if the bolt rubs or the door needs force.
