A no-subscription home security system can avoid a monthly bill, but it also puts more recovery work on the household. A failed hub, replaced router, lost phone, corrupt memory card, forgotten owner account, or unsupported camera can break the system even when every sensor is still mounted correctly.
This checklist is for local-first and self-monitored systems. It separates four jobs that are often bundled together: restoring control, restoring detection, preserving evidence, and rebuilding alerts. Use it before buying a system, after a major change, and whenever the person who set up the system moves out.
Define what “recovered” means
A green app screen is not enough. Write a pass condition for each protection layer.

Build a recovery record before something fails
Store the record somewhere available when the alarm app or internet connection is unavailable. Do not put passwords, recovery codes, and the physical location of spare keys in one unprotected document.
- System maker, model, hub serial number, purchase date, warranty record, and current support links
- Owner account, named administrators, residents, guests, installers, and emergency contacts
- Two-factor authentication method, recovery-code location, backup contact, and account-transfer process
- Device inventory with room, zone type, battery, firmware, radio path, and reset method
- Router name, wired or wireless path, reserved addresses if used, and approved network-change procedure
- Local storage type, capacity, retention rule, overwrite behavior, encryption, and export method
- Current automations, schedules, modes, entry delays, siren rules, and notification owners
- Manual override, keypad, key fob, physical key, safe exit, and emergency calling path
- Last successful test date and known faults

Decide what can actually be backed up
Many consumer systems do not provide a full configuration export. Do not assume a cloud login will recreate rooms, sensor names, automations, codes, notification settings, camera zones, or local recordings on replacement hardware.
- Check whether the maker offers a supported configuration backup or hub-migration process.
- Export only through the documented method. Do not copy a live database or remove storage while it is writing.
- Record device names, zone types, modes, schedules, users, and automations in a human-readable inventory.
- Photograph sensor placement and magnet alignment without exposing entry codes or recovery keys.
- Keep a clean copy of current manuals and reset steps, because support pages and app screens can change.
- Test one restoration path on spare or replacement hardware when the maker supports it.
If there is no supported export, call the inventory a rebuild record, not a backup. A rebuild record reduces guesswork but does not prove settings can be restored automatically.
Protect local video and event evidence
Local storage is not automatically durable storage. A camera may overwrite old clips, a card may fail without a clear warning, an NVR may have the wrong time, or a stolen recorder may remove the only copy.
- Confirm which events record when the internet is disconnected.
- Check whether a card or drive must be encrypted, formatted, or paired to one device.
- Record retention in days under normal activity and during a high-motion event.
- Export a test clip, open it on a second device, and preserve the original file.
- Compare the camera timestamp with a trusted clock and note timezone and daylight-saving behavior.
- Decide how a critical clip is copied off the recorder without changing the original.
- Test the warning path for a full, missing, corrupt, or replaced storage device.

Recover from a lost or replaced phone
- Keep a second authorized adult account where appropriate. Do not share the owner password.
- Verify the second account can receive the required alerts and perform only its intended actions.
- Store two-factor recovery codes securely and test the documented account-recovery path before an emergency.
- When a phone is lost, revoke its sessions, remove trusted-device status, change exposed credentials, and review recent activity.
- Install the current app on the replacement phone from the official store.
- Restore access with the named account, then re-check notification permission, background operation, battery restrictions, mobile-data access, and critical-alert settings.
- Trigger a test event while the replacement phone is on mobile data and the old phone is offline.
Do not make the replacement phone the sole owner until the household has proved alarms, locks, cameras, exports, and user removal. A successful login does not confirm any of those jobs.
Recover from a router or Wi-Fi change
A new router can strand cameras and hubs even when the internet connection itself works. Inventory which devices use Ethernet, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, 5GHz Wi-Fi, Thread, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth, a proprietary radio, or a bridge.
- Back up the supported router configuration and record the existing network before replacement.
- Keep the old router powered off but available for rollback until every security test passes.
- Reconnect the wired hub first, then bridges, cameras, and direct Wi-Fi accessories.
- Use each maker’s documented network-change path. Avoid factory resets unless required.
- Check local control before remote control. Then test mobile data from outside the home network.
- Restart the router, switch, access points, hubs, and cameras in the documented order.
- Leave the system running overnight and review disconnects, missed recordings, and delayed alerts.

Recover from a hub failure
Before buying replacement hardware, confirm the exact model, region, radio support, account requirements, migration path, and whether existing sensors can be transferred without individual resets. Ask what happens to local recordings, device names, automations, codes, subscriptions, and professional-monitoring registration.
- Keep the failed hub powered down and unchanged unless support asks for a documented diagnostic.
- Record its lights, sounds, error messages, network state, and last known successful event.
- Verify power supply, outlet, cable, network port, and backup battery separately.
- Use the maker’s migration process where available. Do not assume account login performs the migration.
- Add or transfer one noncritical device first and test it before moving the rest.
- Recreate zone types, entry delays, siren rules, users, schedules, notifications, and automations from the rebuild record.
- Remove the old hub from the account only after the replacement passes acceptance testing and evidence has been preserved.
If the system is professionally monitored, coordinate the replacement and test mode with the provider. A locally working sensor does not prove the monitoring record, cellular communicator, permit, address, contact list, or dispatch instructions moved correctly.
Recover after a power failure
- Measure actual runtime for the modem, router, switches, access points, hub, sirens, cameras, recorder, and lock bridges.
- Confirm which battery devices keep detecting and which alerts cannot leave the home.
- After power returns, check time, storage, network address, camera recording, sensor state, and automation schedules.
- Look for a silent partial recovery: internet is back, but one switch, access point, recorder, or bridge is not.
- Replace damaged power supplies and swollen or expired batteries through the maker’s current process.
Run the UPS runtime test under the real device load. A UPS label or battery percentage is not a measured security runtime.
Plan for account transfer and move-out
No-subscription systems often stay tied to the first person who created the account. That becomes a security problem when a roommate, tenant, installer, former partner, or previous homeowner leaves.
- Name the legal owner of the equipment, recordings, account, and paid services.
- Use individual accounts and codes so one person can be removed without rebuilding the household.
- Export evidence that must be retained before removing cameras, hubs, or storage.
- Remove departed users, devices, passkeys, app sessions, voice assistants, smart-home bridges, lock codes, and emergency contacts.
- Rotate credentials that were shared or may have been seen.
- Factory-reset only equipment leaving the property, then prove it no longer appears in the old account.
- Repeat the full alert and access test with the remaining users.

60-minute recovery acceptance test
Put monitored services into approved test mode and warn everyone who may receive an alert.
- Minutes 0–10: inventory every required device, user, mode, local control, and physical override.
- Minutes 10–20: trigger each door, window, motion, glass, water, smoke, and carbon-monoxide device only through its approved test procedure.
- Minutes 20–30: test hub siren, added sirens, chimes, keypads, fobs, locks, and safe exit from their real locations.
- Minutes 30–40: test alerts for each named responder on Wi-Fi and mobile data. Record fastest, slowest, missed, duplicate, and wrong-device alerts.
- Minutes 40–50: disconnect internet while keeping local equipment powered. Test detection, local alarm, local recording, local control, history, and recovery.
- Minutes 50–60: create one test recording, find it, export it, open it on a second device, verify its time, and document the result.
A no-subscription system passes only when the household can detect, respond, recover control, and preserve evidence without depending on one person’s memory or one working phone.
When to replace instead of recover
Replacement is the safer choice when the maker has ended support, security updates are no longer available, ownership cannot be transferred, replacement batteries or parts are unavailable, storage errors cannot be detected, the system cannot meet the required alarm job, or recovery requires unsupported workarounds.

Does no subscription mean the system works without internet?
Not necessarily. Local sensors and sirens may keep working while remote alerts, cloud video, voice assistants, automations, or account control fail. Test each layer with the internet disconnected.
Can I back up every home security system?
No. Some systems offer a supported migration or export, while others require a documented manual rebuild. Call it a backup only after you have restored it successfully through the supported process.
Should I reuse the same Wi-Fi name on a new router?
