HomeKit Security Caregiver Handover Checklist 2026: Locks, Alarms, Cameras, Privacy, and Shift Changes

Updated July 2026. A caregiver handover has to work when shifts change, the main phone is missing, the internet is down, or a resident cannot reach the usual control. The goal is not to give every helper permanent administrator access. It is to give each named caregiver the minimum tested access needed for the approved shift, then remove it cleanly when the role ends.

Apple’s current Home sharing guidance distinguishes residents from scheduled guests and lets the home owner control access. Treat Apple Home membership as one layer. Smart-lock codes, alarm users, camera shares, garage apps, monitoring contacts, and account-recovery methods may live elsewhere and must be tested separately.

Start with five caregiver jobs

Choose the right Apple Home role

A resident role is appropriate for someone who lives in the property and needs ongoing control. A guest role is a better starting point for a scheduled caregiver or family helper who needs selected security accessories during a shift. A physical key or vendor-managed lock code may be safer for a narrow care route because it does not expose the rest of the home.

Write down who owns the Apple Home, who can add or remove caregivers, which Home hub provides remote access, and which phones, tablets, watches, speakers, or shared displays can control security accessories. Do not assume an agency roster, Family Sharing, Apple Home membership, an alarm user, and a lock-maker account are the same permission.

Build a door-by-door access map

Use names such as “Front entry” and “Garage interior door,” not sensor numbers. A helper who sees “Zone 14” during an alarm cannot make a safe decision quickly. Pair each route with the relevant contact sensor, lock, camera, light, siren, keypad, and monitoring instruction.

Keep alarm access separate from door access

An unlocked door should not silently disarm the entire home. Give each caregiver an individual alarm user or PIN where the platform supports it. Record which modes the person can use, the entry delay, panic process, monitoring phone number, cancellation word policy, and who receives alerts.

If the household uses Abode, compare the current Smart Security Kit, Abode Lock, Keypad 2, and monitoring plans. Confirm current Apple Home support, user permissions, lock behavior, monitoring features, and plan terms before relying on any workflow.

Limit caregiver camera access

Share only the camera needed to confirm an exterior approach, package area, garage, or common room. Avoid bedrooms, bathrooms, neighbour windows, and other private spaces. Check local audio-recording rules. Record whether the helper can see live video, history, saved clips, microphone controls, or account settings.

Prepare for four failure states

Do not discover these limits during a real alarm. Run tests in an approved mode, tell the monitoring provider when required, and prevent emergency dispatch. Never simulate fire, smoke, carbon monoxide, medical, or police emergencies.

Create a one-page shift handover card

  • Property address and the safest approved entrance.
  • Names and phone numbers for two household decision-makers.
  • Monitoring provider, support number, permit details, and cancellation procedure.
  • Plain-language zone list, including fire and carbon-monoxide devices.
  • Each caregiver’s exact shift, door, alarm, and camera permissions.
  • Internet- and power-outage behavior.
  • Pets, mobility needs, medication or equipment notes shared only with consent.
  • Utility shutoff contacts and building or property-manager contact.
  • Credential expiry date, shift-change owner, and the next test date.

Keep the card where an authorised caregiver can reach it without exposing codes to visitors. Store secrets separately. Review it after a shift change, agency change, move, phone change, router change, new lock, monitoring-plan change, or household change.

Run a 30-minute acceptance test

  1. Stand outside with the main resident’s phone unavailable.
  2. Enter using only the approved caregiver credential.
  3. Confirm the correct door, contact sensor, entry delay, zone name, alert, and local warning.
  4. Use the helper’s own alarm credential to disarm in test mode.
  5. Open only the approved camera and export one harmless test clip if that permission is needed.
  6. Call the monitoring test line or household contact using the written process.
  7. Disconnect internet safely and repeat the local lock, sensor, siren, keypad, and recovery checks.
  8. Close every opening, arm the intended mode, and confirm the owner receives the final status.
  9. Revoke the temporary credential and prove it no longer works.

Remove access after the need ends

Remove the Apple Home guest or resident, lock code, alarm user, camera share, garage access, intercom account, voice link, shared link, monitoring contact, and recovery route. Check old phones and tablets. Then test the old credential at the door, in the alarm app, and on the camera account.

Should a caregiver be an Apple Home resident?

Only if the person genuinely needs broad ongoing control. A scheduled guest, individual lock code, alarm user, or physical key may provide a safer minimum-access route for a shift worker.

Does Apple Home guest access also create an alarm PIN?

Not necessarily. Apple Home, the lock platform, the alarm platform, cameras, monitoring, and building access may use separate accounts and credentials.

What if the internet is down?

Test the exact lock, hub, sensors, siren, keypad, camera, app, cellular path, and monitoring service. Record which functions remain local and which remote functions stop.

How often should the caregiver path be tested?
