A smart-home security setup for a household with a live-in caregiver has to serve two people at once: the resident needs safety, privacy, and control, while the caregiver needs reliable entry and a clear way to respond to alarms. The right starting point is a written access and privacy agreement, not a larger device bundle.

The agreement should answer four questions: who may enter, who may arm or disarm, who may view cameras, and who may change settings. Add start and end dates for temporary roles. Use named accounts and the minimum role
Create an individual account or code for each caregiver rather than sharing the resident’s credentials. If the platform offers resident, guest, viewer, or administrator roles, give the smallest role that completes the assigned task. A person who needs to unlock a door and disarm an alarm rarely needs permission to invite new users or view every camera.
Record which signed-in phones, tablets, watches, smart displays, voice assistants, and browser sessions can control the home. Remove a test account, then prove that its live view, history, lock, alarm, and automation access stop. A name disappearing from one app screen does not prove that every linked service removed the person.

Doors, locks, codes, and shift changes
Give each caregiver a named code or credential. Do not use the resident’s master code, a family-wide PIN, or a key hidden at the property. Where supported, set a schedule that matches the agreed shift and include a documented exception path for delays or emergencies.
Test the exact door before relying on a smart lock. Check deadbolt travel, door alignment, handing, battery condition, radio range, weather exposure, emergency power, mechanical key, and operation from inside. A dragging bolt can look like an account or battery problem.

Alarm modes that match an occupied home
A live-in caregiver changes the meaning of “home” and “away.” Define modes from actual occupancy rather than a single resident’s phone location. Write which doors, windows, motion sensors, glass-break sensors, cameras, sirens, locks, and notifications are active in each mode.
- Day occupied: exterior entries report state; interior movement does not create avoidable alarms.
- Night occupied: perimeter openings are protected while approved movement and safe exit remain possible.
- Resident away, caregiver present: do not let a resident’s geofence arm occupied interior zones.
- Home empty: arm the agreed perimeter and interior protection only after a person confirms the property is clear.
Use a keypad or other local control when possible. Phone geofencing can fail because of location permissions, battery settings, multiple residents, poor signal, or a delayed departure.
Cameras: document purpose, not just placement
For every camera, record the security question it answers. “Who is at the front door?” is specific. “Watch what happens in the house” is not. Use exterior entries or other agreed views before placing cameras inside living space.
Document field of view, privacy masks, activity zones, audio, live viewers, recording state, retention, deletion, downloads, facial recognition, and notification rules. Check local laws, tenancy terms, employment arrangements, and consent requirements before recording audio or private areas.
Do not use security-camera history as an informal work-performance or health-monitoring system. If the household needs care documentation or medical response, use a process designed for that purpose.
Notifications and the response chain
An alert needs an owner and a next action. For each door, alarm, camera, lock, tamper, low-battery, offline, and power event, write:
- who receives the first alert;
- what facts they check before acting;
- how long they wait for a reply;
- who is the second contact;
- when the monitoring company or emergency services are appropriate; and
- where the outcome is recorded.
Run the plan on both Wi-Fi and mobile data. Check notification permissions, Focus or Do Not Disturb settings, signed-in accounts, time-zone schedules, battery restrictions, and the current phone number. The emergency contact plan provides a drill format.
Never ask a resident, caregiver, or family member to enter a home where a break-in may be in progress. Give emergency services the location and observed facts rather than guesses.
Smart-home routines that stay predictable
Keep security routines short and visible. Good examples include an entry light after dark, a reminder when an exterior door remains open, or a porch light when motion begins overnight. Record the trigger, conditions, actions, owner, quiet hours, failure effect, and manual override.
Avoid routines that lock doors without confirmation, disable safe exit, expose a caregiver’s private schedule, or arm occupied zones because one phone left the property. Test every routine with the resident home, caregiver home, both home, and the home empty.

At the start of an arrangement, record the caregiver’s named account, code, allowed doors, alarm modes, camera access, alert duties, local controls, backup key process, and support contact. Run one supervised test before the caregiver works alone.
