Why WiFi-Free Security Matters
Your internet goes down more often than you think. Comcast’s average US customer experienced 3.5 outages per month in 2025. Each outage averaged 47 minutes. If your security system depends on WiFi, that is 47 minutes of zero protection — no alerts, no monitoring, no camera feeds.
Burglars know this. Power-cutting and WiFi jamming are real tactics. A cellular-only alarm system removes the single point of failure and keeps your home protected regardless of internet status.
Quick Comparison: Cellular Security Systems
| System | Cellular | WiFi Required? | Monthly Cost | Self-Monitor Free? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Abode | LTE built-in | No (works cellular-only) | $0–$20/mo | Yes |
| SimpliSafe | LTE built-in | No (works cellular-only) | $0–$27.99/mo | Yes |
| Ring Alarm | LTE backup (Ring Protect Pro) | Yes (primary connection) | $20/mo required | No |
| Cove | LTE built-in | No (works cellular-only) | $14.99–$27.99/mo | No |
| ADT | LTE built-in | No (works cellular-only) | $28.99–$59.99/mo | No |
1. Abode — Best Cellular System With Free Monitoring
Cellular: LTE built into gateway | WiFi needed: No | Monthly: $0–$20
Abode’s gateway connects via cellular out of the box. You can run the entire system without ever connecting to WiFi — sensors trigger, the siren sounds, and your phone gets push alerts over cellular. The free tier includes self-monitoring with no monthly fees.
What sets Abode apart: it doubles as a smart home hub (Z-Wave, Zigbee, HomeKit). You get alarm + home automation in one device. The Connect plan ($6/mo) adds cellular professional monitoring. The Connect+ plan ($20/mo) adds camera recording and advanced automations.
The only catch: cameras still need WiFi for video streaming. But the alarm system itself — sensors, siren, monitoring, phone alerts — all work on cellular alone.
3-year cost (self-monitor): $200 kit + $0 = $200
See our no-contract systems guide for more on Abode’s free tier.
2. SimpliSafe — Most Popular Cellular DIY System
Cellular: LTE built into base station | WiFi needed: No | Monthly: $0–$27.99
SimpliSafe’s base station has a built-in cellular radio. Sensors, keypad, siren, and monitoring all work without WiFi. The free self-monitor tier sends phone alerts over cellular. The paid Standard plan ($17.99/mo) adds professional dispatch.
SimpliSafe’s advantage: the largest sensor selection of any DIY brand. Entry sensors, glass break, water leak, freeze, smoke, CO — all cellular-connected through the base station. The system is dead simple to set up and reliable.
Downside: no smart home hub features. No HomeKit, no Z-Wave, no Zigbee. It is a dedicated alarm system, nothing more.
3-year cost (self-monitor): $249 kit + $0 = $249
3. Ring Alarm — Cellular Backup Only (Not Primary)
Cellular: LTE backup only | WiFi needed: Yes (primary) | Monthly: $20/mo (required for cellular)
Ring Alarm uses WiFi as its primary connection. Cellular is backup only, and it requires the Ring Protect Pro plan ($20/month). Without that plan, your Ring system has zero cellular capability.
This matters: if your WiFi goes down and you are on the basic plan, Ring Alarm cannot contact the monitoring center. It becomes a local siren with no remote alerts.
Ring is a strong system in other ways — great app, tight Amazon/Alexa integration, affordable hardware. But for cellular-first buyers, it is not the right choice.
3-year cost (with cellular): $200 kit + $720 = $920
4. Cove — Budget Cellular With Mandatory Monitoring
Cellular: LTE built-in | WiFi needed: No | Monthly: $14.99–$27.99
Cove’s panel connects via cellular by default. No WiFi configuration needed — plug it in and it connects. Every plan includes cellular monitoring, even the $14.99 Basic tier.
The trade-off: no free self-monitor option. You must pay at least $14.99/month to use the system. And Cove sells zero cameras, so you will need a separate camera solution.
3-year cost (Basic plan): $199 kit + $540 = $739
5. ADT — Legacy Pro-Install With Cellular
Cellular: LTE built-in | WiFi needed: No | Monthly: $28.99–$59.99
ADT has used cellular connections for decades — long before WiFi security existed. Every ADT system includes a cellular radio. Professional installation means a technician configures everything.
The downside: cost. ADT’s minimum is $28.99/month, and most packages land at $45–$60/month with cameras and smart home features. Equipment is $200–$600+ depending on the package. Over 3 years, you are looking at $1,200–$2,700+.
3-year cost (basic): $200 equip + $1,044 = $1,244
3-Year Cost Comparison
| System | Equipment | 3-Year Monitoring | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abode (self-monitor) | $200 | $0 | $200 |
| SimpliSafe (self-monitor) | $249 | $0 | $249 |
| Cove (Basic) | $199 | $540 | $739 |
| Ring Alarm (with cellular) | $200 | $720 | $920 |
| ADT (basic) | $200 | $1,044 | $1,244 |
What About WiFi Jamming?
WiFi jamming devices are cheap ($20–50 on certain markets) and can knock out every WiFi device in a home from 30+ feet away. Cellular signals operate on completely different frequencies and cannot be jammed by consumer WiFi jammers.
Systems with cellular-primary connections (Abode, SimpliSafe, Cove, ADT) are immune to WiFi jamming attacks. Ring Alarm, which depends on WiFi as its primary connection, is vulnerable unless you pay for the $20/mo cellular backup plan.

Bottom Line
Best overall: Abode — $0/mo self-monitoring, cellular built-in, smart home hub included. $200 total over 3 years.
Most popular: SimpliSafe — proven cellular reliability, widest sensor selection, $249 self-monitor.
Avoid for cellular: Ring Alarm — cellular is backup-only and costs $20/month extra.
If your internet is unreliable or you want protection against WiFi attacks, a cellular-first alarm system is not optional — it is the baseline. Start with no-contract systems that include cellular at no extra charge.
2026 update: no-WiFi system reliability checklist
- Confirm cellular failover triggers automatically and maintains arm/disarm control during internet loss.
- Test siren, sensor alerts, and mobile notifications in a planned outage drill before relying on the setup.
- Budget for backup power and battery refresh cycles so protection remains stable year-round.
