Replacing a HomePod can change more than music. The old speaker may be a home hub, a voice-control point, an Intercom endpoint, a Matter or Thread path on supported models, an automation dependency, and a device tied to the Home owner, room, Wi-Fi, and Apple account. Inventory those jobs before unplugging or resetting it.

This checklist treats the HomePod as one layer in the security design. Door and window contacts, locks, cameras, alarms, local sirens, monitoring, and physical keys still need their own documented behavior when the speaker, internet, power, home hub, or one phone is unavailable.

1. Confirm what the old HomePod actually does

Open the Home app and record the old device’s exact model, room, software version, owner, network, power location, active or standby home-hub state, paired-speaker state, media account, personal-request setting, voice recognition, Intercom zones, alarms, timers, and every automation or scene that references the speaker or its room.

Use Apple’s current home hub and remote-access requirements to confirm which Apple TV or HomePod devices are eligible in the current setup. Do not assume the oldest, newest, nearest, or preferred device is the active hub. Save screenshots of hub state before and after the change.

2. Build a replacement and rollback plan

Do not remove the old speaker first. Confirm a second eligible home hub where remote access or hub-based automations are required. Confirm a second Home administrator can recover the Home, router, camera accounts, alarm app, locks, monitoring contacts, and Apple account without the departing or unavailable owner.

Pre-change gate

  • Every resident has a physical key or approved local entry that does not depend on the speaker, phone, internet, or one cloud account.
  • The alarm can arm, disarm, sound locally, and follow its documented monitoring path without voice control.
  • Critical cameras have a known recording destination, retention period, export path, and outage state.
  • The old and replacement devices are on supported software and the household has saved model, serial, purchase, warranty, and support records.
  • The change window avoids travel, severe weather, guests, deliveries, contractor access, or a period when the home cannot tolerate a failed automation.
  • The rollback decision is written: when to stop, whether to re-add the old speaker, and which security functions must pass before closeout.

3. Add the replacement to the correct Home and room

Verify the Home name and room before accepting defaults. Similar Home or room names can place the speaker in the wrong control boundary. Confirm the Apple account, household membership, media account, language, Siri and voice settings, personal requests, Intercom, explicit-content choices, location features, analytics, sound recognition where supported, and every permission shown during setup.

Voice and privacy controls

  1. Stand inside, outside, and near open windows or shared walls. Test whether a person beyond the intended room can trigger sensitive commands.
  2. Ask ordinary household and sensitive security questions. Confirm personal data, messages, reminders, calendars, location, camera views, locks, garage controls, and alarm commands follow the intended authentication rules.
  3. Test each household member and an unrecognized voice. Record allowed, denied, ambiguous, and phone-confirmation results.
  4. Review Intercom destinations and notifications. Remove rooms or people who do not need the message.
  5. Confirm no automation uses a voice, presence, or media event to unlock, open, disarm, suppress a local warning, or expose camera privacy without a safer confirmation path.

4. Reconcile Matter, Thread, bridges, and direct controls

A Home app tile does not reveal the whole path. For each lock, contact, motion device, light, siren, camera, doorbell, thermostat, garage opener, and bridge, record the exact model, radio, controller, border router where relevant, bridge, power, account, owner, automation, local control, and recovery.

Do not reset or recommission devices unless the documented migration requires it. A device that changes fabric, Home, bridge, or owner can lose codes, automations, room assignment, history, sharing, or support. Replace one dependency at a time and keep the old path available until the new route passes.

5. Prove direct security before testing convenience

6. Run hub, internet, power, phone, and account failures

7. Remove and reset the old HomePod safely

Remove the old device only after the replacement, alternate hub, and required security jobs pass. Record the serial, room, owner, last software version, removal date, reset procedure, physical condition, power cable, warranty, and final destination. Use maker instructions for reset and recycling; do not sell or transfer a device while it remains tied to the Home or owner account.

  • The old speaker no longer appears as an active or standby home hub, room device, Intercom endpoint, automation target, audio destination, owner device, or account session.

  4. Walk every camera route by day and in low light. Verify first useful frame, privacy boundary, alert, recording, timestamp, retention, playback, and export.
  5. Test recognized, unrecognized, inside-room, outside-room, Intercom, personal-request, and sensitive security commands. Record every allowed and denied result.
  6. Unplug the old HomePod, then the replacement separately. Record hub state, direct devices, Matter/Thread devices, remote access, cameras, automations, alerts, delay, missed events, and recovery.
  7. Disconnect internet safely and run the documented power-loss path. Record alarm, communicator, router, hubs, locks, cameras, sirens, monitoring, and restoration.
  8. Remove and reset the old device. Prove stale Home, account, voice, sharing, automation, and recovery access fails. Save the owner handover and next-test date.
