A smart lock reports the bolt or motor state. A separate contact reports whether the opening is closed. Use both. “Locked” plus “open” is a mismatch, not a secure door.

5. Treat reachable windows and balcony doors as openings

Garden-level windows, fire-escape windows, and balcony or patio doors can be direct approaches. Install contacts according to the device instructions and building permission. Test closed, cracked, fully open, and reclosed states from the final position.

Do not use a camera or motion event as a substitute for opening state. A camera may show movement near a window, but it does not prove the sash, slider, or latch changed state. Use the alarm zone for the opening and a smart-home action only for added context.

Safe window routine

  1. The direct contact changes state.
  2. The alarm handles the armed-state event.
  3. The smart-home layer may turn on a nearby light or send a named convenience notice.

6. Keep common-area motion out of occupancy logic

Neighbors, visitors, delivery staff, cleaners, pets, and building workers create normal shared-area motion. Do not use common hallway or lobby movement to decide whether the resident is home, arm or disarm the alarm, unlock the apartment, or start indoor recording.
