2. Build a household audibility map

If a manufacturer requires a technician or monitoring-center test, use that route.

5. Treat phone alerts as a separate path

Record which phones receive push notifications, text messages, automated calls, or monitoring-center calls. Confirm that the alert names the correct home and zone. An alert labeled “sensor” is less useful than one labeled “basement exterior door.”

7. Include pets, guests, neighbors, and shared walls

Plan where pets will be during a test and how they react. Use the shortest approved sound interval that still proves the path. Keep gates and exterior doors controlled. If a pet shows distress, stop and use a quieter manufacturer-supported test or professional help.

Tell regular guests, cleaners, carers, and contractors what alarm sounds require them to do. Give them only the access and codes needed for their role. A guest should not have to improvise whether a tone means exit delay, intrusion, smoke, or a maintenance test.

8. Record failures as operating work

How often to repeat the test

Repeat after a siren, hub, router, phone, wearable, door, wall, room use, hearing aid, resident, monitoring plan, or account changes. Repeat after a power or internet outage, a nuisance alarm, a missed monitoring call, or a move. For routine checks, follow device and provider instructions rather than inventing a universal calendar.

Keep the final map, test record, provider confirmation, and unresolved actions with the household emergency contact plan. The result should be a short operating record that another responsible adult can understand without the original installer present.
