Patio-door security starts with the door, not the app. A contact sensor cannot correct a frame that flexes, a keeper that barely holds, a sliding panel that can be lifted, or a French-door bolt that never seats. Fix the opening first. Then add direct sensing, useful video, lighting, local warning, and a response plan that still makes sense when internet, power, a phone, or a paid service is unavailable.

1. Identify the exact patio-door type

Do not buy a generic “door sensor” before mapping the moving parts. Record the manufacturer if known, panel count, active leaf, inactive leaf, track, frame material, lock type, handle clearance, weather seal, screen, blinds, pets, children, and normal traffic pattern.

  • Sliding glass door: check track condition, panel overlap, lift clearance, latch and keeper alignment, and whether a secondary bar or pin can engage without damaging the frame.
  • French doors: identify the active leaf, inactive leaf, meeting stile, top and bottom bolts, threshold, and which leaf must be sensed.
  • Hinged patio door: inspect hinges, strike, latch, deadbolt, frame fasteners, closer if fitted, and weather-seal pressure.
  • Folding or multi-panel door: record every panel, hinge, shoot bolt, latch, interlock, and manufacturer restriction. One contact at one end may not prove the whole opening is secure.
  • Lift-and-slide or specialty system: use the maker’s operating and hardware guidance. Avoid drilling, adhesive placement, or added restraints that can interfere with drainage, seals, warranties, or safe operation.

2. Fix closure and alignment before adding electronics

Close and lock the door with normal hand pressure. The latch, deadbolt, hook, or shoot bolts should engage fully without lifting, pulling, pushing, or slamming. Inspect loose handles, damaged rollers, worn tracks, cracked frames, shallow keepers, loose fasteners, swollen timber, failed seals, and debris. A motorized lock or stronger magnet should not hide a mechanical problem.

For sliding doors, confirm the panel cannot be lifted or moved far enough to bypass the latch under ordinary hand testing. A secondary restraint can add a separate layer, but it must not block required egress or create a child-safety hazard. For French doors, prove the inactive leaf is secured before treating the active leaf as locked.

3. Put direct sensors on the moving section that matters

Mount the contact and magnet within the maker’s stated gap and orientation. Keep both pieces clear of handles, blinds, screens, drainage paths, weather seals, and the panel’s travel. Clean and prepare the surface as directed. If the frame or door is metal, verify the selected sensor’s mounting guidance and range rather than assuming the same gap will work.

Name the point in plain language, such as “Family room patio slider” or “Dining French door active leaf.” The zone-naming guide helps keep alerts and monitoring calls unambiguous. If one opening has multiple moving leaves, test whether each leaf needs its own point.

4. Treat glass-break and motion as supplemental layers

A glass-break sensor may cover a glass surface, but it does not prove the panel stayed shut. A motion sensor may detect movement inside, but pets, curtains, heating, sunlight, room layout, and arming mode affect placement. Keep direct opening detection as the primary signal when the goal is to know whether a patio door opened.

Follow the maker’s placement and test method. Do not test a glass-break device by hitting the glass. Record which panes and rooms the device is intended to cover, what sounds or conditions can cause a false alert, and whether night or stay mode bypasses interior motion.

5. Set entry delay to match the real route

If the patio door is a normal entry route, document who uses it, where the keypad or disarm control is, whether children or guests need access, and what delay creates the least false-alarm risk without leaving a long open window. Test the full sequence: door opens, the correct countdown starts, local warning is audible where needed, the household can disarm, the provider receives the event where purchased, and the system restores cleanly. Do not assume every mode uses the same delay.

6. Make cameras useful without recording the neighborhood

A camera should capture the approach, hands near the handle, the threshold, and a useful departure path. It should not default to a wide view of a neighbor’s yard, windows, or shared space. Check physical aim first, then use activity and privacy controls where the exact model supports them. Walk toward the door from each realistic route by day and in low light. Check the first useful frame, face and clothing detail at the relevant distance, glare through glass, infrared reflection, rain, insects, plants, curtains, and motion crossing the detection area. Confirm the timestamp, clip start, clip end, retention, export, and what records when internet or a paid plan is unavailable.

7. Use lighting to support people and video

Light the approach and threshold without creating glare into the camera or neighboring property. Test from outside and inside because glass can reflect interior light at night. Record manual control, timer or motion behavior, backup expectations, and who maintains lamps, batteries, or fixtures.

8. Write the unpaid, outage, and failure states

9. Compare three-year cost, not the starter box

Patio-door security FAQ

Is a contact sensor enough for a sliding glass door?

No. It reports panel position when installed and configured correctly, but it does not strengthen the latch, frame, track, or glass. Pair direct sensing with sound mechanical closure and a tested response plan.

Should a patio door have an entry delay?

Only if the household normally enters there and has a practical disarm route. Document and test the exact mode because a patio door used only as a secondary exit may need different behavior.

Can one sensor cover French doors?

Sometimes one contact can report the active leaf, but it may not prove the inactive leaf or its top and bottom bolts are secure. Map and test both leaves before deciding.

Do I need a camera if I have door sensors?
