For a system that charges up to $29.99/month, the Google Home experience is disappointing. If Google is your ecosystem, Abode or ADT Self Setup are significantly better options.

#4 — Vivint: Basic Voice Control
Vivint supports arm/disarm by voice through Google Assistant. Camera streaming to Nest displays works on some models. But Vivint’s own Smart Hub is the real control center — Google Home is an accessory, not the primary interface.
At $29.99–$44.99/month plus $1,200–$2,000 in equipment, Vivint is the most expensive option on this list. The Google integration doesn’t justify that premium over Abode.

20-minute Google Home security handoff test
- Open each protected door and confirm the alarm platform reports the correct opening without depending on a camera.
- Ask the intended Google display to show each supported camera; check delay, naming, and household permissions.
- Trigger one low-risk routine, such as turning on an entry light, and confirm it cannot unlock or disarm unexpectedly.
- Disconnect the internet and record which direct sensors, sirens, local controls, recordings, and alerts remain.

1. Start with the physical opening and authoritative alarm state
Give each protected door, window, motion area, garage, gate, panic control, life-safety device, and environmental sensor a unique name. Trigger the physical device, then compare the panel, security app, Google Home surface where supported, automation, notification, and monitoring record. Treat the security system as the authority for arming, alarm state, bypass, reset, and response unless the exact integration documentation and test prove otherwise.
Use the open-zone troubleshooting guide when a contact sticks, reports the wrong state, chatters, or needs a bypass. Record alignment, mounting, battery, radio, zone label, physical state, panel state, exposed integration state, correction, and retest. Do not use a voice response or app tile as proof when it conflicts with the physical opening or panel.
2. Prove alarm recognition without treating a smart speaker as a siren
A Google Home speaker, display, phone notification, camera chime, panel siren, accessory siren, and monitored call do different jobs. Test the alarm route from bedrooms, living areas, offices, garages, basements, and other occupied spaces. Include closed doors, normal background noise, sleeping hours, hearing needs, phone quiet modes, wearable alerts, and any required visual route.

3. Audit users across Google, security, camera, and lock accounts

Record who can arm, disarm, unlock, view video, hear audio, export clips, edit routines, add members, change plans, manage payment, or recover each account.

Add one temporary user, prove the intended limits, remove the user, and confirm access ends in the security app, Google Home, camera app, lock app, signed-in devices, and automations. 4. Give every alert a named response owner
Write separate routes for intrusion, smoke, carbon monoxide, panic, water, camera, doorbell, lock, garage, low-battery, device-offline, account, and monitoring events. For each, name the primary recipient, backup, safe verification method, time limit, contact order, emergency boundary, and closure rule. A camera notification or voice announcement is not automatically an alarm event or monitored response.
Use the alert-escalation checklist to test delivery on locked phones, cellular data, quiet modes, normal work schedules, and sleeping hours. Record which platform created the event and which person owns the next action. An automation that sends a message without an accountable responder is unfinished.
5. Draw the network and service boundary
Inventory the alarm panel, hubs, bridges, cameras, doorbells, locks, speakers, displays, phones, routers, access points, and third-party services. Record radio type, local identity, internet destination where known, account, update owner, discovery requirement, command route, data shared, failure effect, and recovery owner. 6. Run a controlled internet-outage test
Disconnect the approved internet path without cutting power. Trigger a representative door contact, motion event, siren, camera event, lock action, voice request, and automation. Record local alarm behavior, app state, Google Home state, recording, queued notifications, backup communications where offered, monitoring contact, restoration order, and the time each function returns.
Use the internet-outage test log to keep functions separate. Do not write “works offline” when only the local alarm continues but remote commands, Google Home routines, camera history, cloud detection, app alerts, or provider response change.
7. Build one incident timeline across platforms
Set and record the time zone on the panel, camera platform, phones, routers, exported files, and monitoring record. Stage one permitted event and gather the physical trigger, zone log, camera clip, Google Home or app notification, user action, monitoring contact where applicable, and reset. Record clock differences instead of silently changing timestamps.

Plans and service terms change.
