Start with a controlled image-quality baseline

Save short daytime and nighttime samples before touching the camera. Record the date, local weather, camera name, exact model, firmware, stream resolution, aspect ratio, digital zoom, frame rate, compression, infrared mode, nearby lights, and whether the problem appears in live view, recordings, exports, or all three. A screenshot from a phone is useful, but an original exported clip is the better comparison file.

Identify the surface before choosing a cleaner

Write down whether the exposed surface is a glass lens cover, coated optical window, polycarbonate dome, acrylic cover, removable rain shield, or an unknown material. Products that are safe on one surface can haze, craze, scratch, or strip a coating from another. Check the exact manual or support record for permitted water, soap, cloth, pressure, and chemical limits.

  • Do not spray liquid directly at the camera, microphone, speaker, card slot, cable entry, reset opening, ventilation path, or seam.
  • Do not use paper towels, kitchen scourers, dirty rags, abrasive powders, compressed shop air, pressure washers, or an unapproved solvent.
  • Do not polish away scratches on a coated window unless the manufacturer provides that procedure.
  • Do not rotate a motorized lens, force a pan-tilt mechanism, or change focus by hand unless the model instructions call for it.
  • Do not open a sealed outdoor housing merely to dry it. Confirm the support and warranty route first.

Axis documents one model-specific example: its M3086-V instructions call for non-abrasive, solvent-free neutral soap or detergent mixed with pure water and a soft clean cloth for the dome, followed by a pure-water rinse and soft-cloth drying. That method is evidence for that device family, not permission to treat every camera surface the same way.

Make the work area safe before climbing or disconnecting anything

Outdoor camera cleaning often creates more risk than the image fault. Avoid wet weather, high wind, heat-stressed roofs, unsafe ladders, overhead electrical hazards, traffic lanes, and work above occupied entrances. Use a second person where the access plan requires one. If the camera is beyond safe reach, hire an installer or building-maintenance professional.

  1. Tell authorized viewers that the camera may be unavailable and record the maintenance window.
  2. Preserve any needed recordings before power, storage, or network changes.
  3. Disarm only the required camera or automation, not unrelated protection.

Use a dry-first cleaning sequence

Start with the least invasive method the manufacturer permits. A clean air blower intended for optical work may be suitable for some exposed surfaces, but canned propellant and shop air can drive contaminants into seams or leave residue.   1. Remove loose debris: inspect for insects, web anchors, leaves, grit, and flaking paint around the mount. Do not drag grit across the viewing window.
  2. Wipe gently: use a clean, soft, lint-free cloth reserved for optical surfaces. Work with light pressure rather than repeated force.
  3. Treat approved film: if the exact instructions allow a damp method, apply the approved liquid to the cloth, not the camera.
  4. Dry the surface: use a second clean cloth so droplets do not become new water spots.
  5. Inspect at an angle: use indirect light to find streaks, scratches, coating damage, remaining film, and residue around infrared emitters.

Check the mount, field of view, and infrared scene after cleaning

Cleaning can nudge a bracket or dome, especially when the fasteners were already loose. Compare the new field of view with the saved baseline. Confirm the horizon, door or gate coverage, privacy boundaries, public areas, neighbor property, activity zones, detection zones, masking, package area, face height, and required evidence path. If the camera has a varifocal or motorized lens, use its approved focus process.

  • Run a daytime walk test at the near, middle, and far points that matter.
  • Run a night test with normal exterior and interior lighting, then record infrared reflection and moving insects.
  • Check that a rain shield or eave does not enter the frame or reflect infrared light.
  • Verify that branches, hanging cables, flags, vents, and reflective signs do not create repeat motion.

Prove recording and alerts, not just live view

A clean live image is only one pass condition. Build a maintenance record instead of a fixed cleaning schedule
