1. Define the security jobs that must continue

Start with the household jobs, not the apps. Write what must remain available during a handover: perimeter detection, occupied-home arming, entry codes, fire or carbon-monoxide alarms, medical or duress contacts, camera evidence, package alerts, remote access, professional monitoring, and local response.

3. Name people by role, not by family label

“My daughter knows the system” is not an operating plan. Name the primary owner, backup administrator, local responder, evidence custodian, billing contact, monitoring contact, and professional adviser where one is needed. One person may hold several roles, but each duty needs a named owner and a second route if that person is unavailable.

Record what event activates the handover and who verifies it. Incapacity, death, an extended hospital stay, sale of the home, and a routine holiday are different events. The person who can feed a pet or unlock a door may not be authorised to view bedroom cameras, change monitoring contacts, cancel service, or access stored footage.

4. Use supported account sharing before an emergency

Create a named backup administrator or household member through the platform’s supported role system where available. Give only the permissions required. 5. Separate platform succession from device ownership

Apple and Google offer account-level planning tools, but those tools do not automatically prove ownership of every third-party camera, lock, alarm, subscription, or local recorder linked to the account.

  • Apple documents how an account holder can add a Legacy Contact and what that contact needs to request access.
  • Google documents Inactive Account Manager, which can notify selected contacts or share chosen data after a defined period of inactivity.

Record whether those tools are configured, the review date, and which data they cover. Then document each security vendor separately. Ask the vendor in writing how an authorised person can recover, transfer, close, or replace an account after incapacity or death. Keep the response with the system record.

6. Plan alarm and smart-lock access without a master-code leak

Create individual codes for the backup administrator and local responder where the equipment permits it. Record who issued each code, its permissions, its intended use, and how it will be removed. Avoid one shared family or contractor code.

Document the difference between:

  • an app login;
  • an alarm user code;
  • an installer or dealer code;
  • a smart-lock PIN;
  • a physical key;
  • an emergency-power or mechanical override;
  • a duress code, if the system provides one.

Never place an installer, master, recovery, or duress code in an unsealed household binder. The handover record should say where the protected credential is held and who is authorised to release it. Test the physical key and the expected low-battery path before relying on either.

7. Protect camera privacy during the handover

Run a monitored-system test through the provider’s approved procedure. Verify that the backup contact recognises the caller, knows the property, understands when to request help, and can reach someone on site without entering an unsafe scene.   5. Change contacts and billing before old phone numbers or cards are closed.
