1. Start with the door’s real job

Inspect the slab, frame, hinges, latch, deadbolt, threshold, seals, handing, and closing force. The bolt should extend without lifting or pushing the door. 3. Use locks only when the door needs access control

Exterior, shared, rental, or service doors may benefit from named codes and a tested key fallback. An interior closet usually does not need a smart lock and must not trap a person, child, pet, or service worker. Confirm egress, fire separation, shutoff access, and landlord or building approval before changing hardware.

Give residents separate codes. Use time-limited access for cleaners, contractors, or carers. Record who can add users, unlock remotely, see history, change automations, and recover the account. Remove old codes and vendor access after a visit or tenancy ends.

4. Put cameras outside private laundry space

30-minute laundry-room acceptance test
