A renovation changes the security state of a home before it changes the finished floor plan. Doors may be propped open, windows may be removed, contractors may know alarm codes, cameras may be covered for dust, and circuits or internet service may be interrupted without warning. A system that worked yesterday can look healthy in an app while several important protections are unavailable.
This home security renovation checklist treats the project as a temporary operating state. It helps an owner decide which zones remain authoritative, who can enter, what gets recorded, how privacy is protected, and how the system returns to normal after each construction phase. It is not a substitute for building-code, fire-safety, electrical, insurance, or monitoring-company advice.
Start with a renovation security register
Create one project record before the first demolition or delivery. List the normal alarm state, the planned work area, every affected opening, camera, lock, sensor, circuit, network device, and automation, plus the person who can approve a change. Record the expected start and finish date for each temporary condition. Keep the register separate from the construction schedule. The builder may track tasks, but the homeowner or designated security owner should control alarm state, user access, camera privacy, and restoration evidence. Survey the site before work begins
Walk the property with the project lead while the system is in its normal state. Open each protected door and window, trigger each relevant motion detector, confirm the actual zone name, and note which alerts reach which people. Do not rely only on the device list in an app. A sensor named “window 3” cannot support a safe bypass decision when three rooms are being altered.

The result should distinguish a sensor that reports an opening from a camera that may show motion. Video can support evidence, but it is not automatically a replacement for a direct door or window zone. Likewise, a smart lock reporting “locked” does not prove the door is closed or that a removed frame is secure.
Agree on access before issuing a code
Use named, time-bounded access wherever the system supports it. A foreperson, electrician, cleaner, and delivery team do not need the same permissions. Avoid sharing the owner’s master alarm code, account password, recovery code, physical key, or smart-home administrator invitation. If a platform cannot create accountable temporary users, use the narrowest alternative and keep a manual issue-and-return record.
Define the permitted entrance, work hours, early-arrival process, late-departure process, key storage, and who may admit a subcontractor. Decide what happens when the scheduled person changes. Create clear alarm modes for work and non-work hours
A renovation needs at least three named operating states: occupied work, unattended worksite, and normal household. Large projects may also need overnight open-envelope and power-isolation states. For each state, specify which direct zones are active, which are bypassed, whether monitoring is expected, who receives alerts, and which temporary control covers every missing zone.
Occupied work state
Keep unaffected perimeter and private-area zones active where practical. Construction movement can make whole-house motion detection unsuitable, but that does not require disabling every door, window, cabinet, leak, or private-room control. Use a deliberate work-area boundary and test that workers cannot enter protected living areas without a clear event.
Unattended worksite state
At the end of each shift, close or physically secure every temporary barrier, remove accessible tools and keys, restore cameras that were covered, check water and power conditions, and arm the agreed state. One named person should perform the closeout; “the crew will handle it” is not an accountable response plan.
Normal household state
Do not call the house normal merely because workers have left. A bypassed zone, muted notification, disabled automation, portable camera, or temporary code may remain. The register must show that each temporary change has been reversed or deliberately carried into the next day.
Protect direct opening zones during demolition
Removing a frame or sash may leave a contact sensor hanging, missing, or permanently closed. Never tape a magnet beside a sensor simply to stop trouble alerts and then forget it. If a direct zone must be unavailable, document the gap and use a physical temporary barrier appropriate to the project, an alternate opening detector where suitable, and a daily inspection. Confirm any temporary sensor placement with the provider or installer rather than assuming adhesive and radio performance.
After new doors or windows are installed, inspect alignment through the full movement range. Test closed, partly open, fully open, locked, unlocked, and any vent position. A sensor that changes state only when the sash is opened widely may miss the condition the household cares about. Check that the finished label identifies the real opening and floor.
Manage cameras without turning the worksite into a privacy problem
Tell workers what cameras cover, why they are used, when they record, and who can view footage. Follow local law and contract requirements, especially around audio. Keep cameras away from bathrooms, changing areas, neighbour property, and places where workers reasonably expect privacy. If an indoor camera must be moved, record its former view, new view, power source, network, storage, and restoration date.
Construction creates dust, glare, vibration, ladders, plastic sheeting, and repeated movement. These can trigger alerts or ruin evidence. Clean lenses with the manufacturer-approved method, review night images after temporary lighting changes, and verify that a camera has not been aimed into a wall or covered by a new cabinet. Separate construction evidence from household surveillance
Decide whether the goal is intrusion evidence, delivery confirmation, work-progress documentation, or remote supervision. Each goal needs different coverage and retention. Limit access to the people who need it, review shared links and downloaded clips, and set a deletion date for temporary construction footage unless an incident, warranty issue, or legal requirement justifies keeping it.
Do not give a contractor the household camera account merely so they can check a delivery. Use a single-purpose view, a separate user with limited permissions, or a human confirmation process. At project close, remove temporary users, revoke shared links, and verify that no worker device remains signed in.
Plan for power, internet, and network changes
Ask the electrician which circuits may be isolated and whether the alarm hub, router, cameras, locks, or chime equipment share them. A battery icon is not proof of adequate runtime. Test the actual outage behavior before work: local arming, siren, direct-zone reporting, cellular path if subscribed, remote alerts, camera recording, lock operation, and recovery when power returns.
If the router, Wi-Fi name, password, or access-point position will change, make a device migration list. Avoid changing every device at once. Preserve a tested alarm path while cameras and smart-home devices move. Record which products need local Bluetooth setup, physical reset, setup codes, cloud credentials, or owner presence. Keep security equipment off an unrestricted guest network offered to the whole crew.

Control dust, vibration, heat, and water risk
Dust can affect cameras, motion detectors, smoke devices, contacts, keypads, and ventilation. Do not cover a life-safety detector or disable it without an approved plan. Record exactly what is offline, for how long, who is watching the condition, and how it will be restored and tested.
Cutting, sanding, drilling, temporary heating, and open plumbing can create false events or real hazards. Place leak detection where supply lines and drains are being changed, but keep sensing cables and devices out of damage paths. Set an escalation rule for water alerts that does not depend on a worker noticing a phone notification. If the project changes the route of a pipe, update the sensor map after walls close.
Handle monitoring and emergency contacts explicitly
Tell the monitoring provider about the renovation if its procedures or permits require it. Confirm how to place the system on test, how long test mode lasts, which signals are suppressed, and how normal dispatch is restored. “On test” can mean different things across providers and signal types. Ask about burglary, fire, panic, duress, environmental, and supervisory events separately.
Update the call list only when needed and keep at least one contact who is not inside the noisy work area. Make sure the foreperson understands that a monitoring call, siren, or emergency event is not merely another construction notification. For any responder plan, provide the correct address, access route, site hazards, pets, temporary barriers, and a person able to attend.
Pause automations deliberately
Renovation can make a useful automation unsafe or confusing. Auto-lock may trap a worker outside, a geofence may disarm while the house is unattended, motion lighting may stay on all day, and a door event may shut heating or power used for curing materials. List every security-related routine and assign one of three states: keep, modify, or pause.
Record the original logic before changing it. Name the trigger, conditions, actions, notifications, time window, and owner. Do not delete a routine without a restoration record. After re-enabling it, test the original purpose and the failure case. A scene that runs successfully is not proof that the underlying alarm state changed.
Run a daily security closeout
- Confirm everyone has left and account for any person expected to remain.
- Collect physical keys, access cards, portable remotes, and shared equipment that should not leave the site.
- Close and physically inspect doors, windows, temporary walls, gates, and work-area boundaries.
- Remove obstructions from locks and contacts; check new frames for alignment.

- Remove rubbish or packaging that hides an opening or provides climbing access.
- Arm the defined unattended-worksite state and verify it from the panel as well as the app.

A concise closeout record is more useful than a stream of informal messages. Include date, person, alarm mode, open exceptions, temporary users active, cameras offline, environmental concerns, and the next review time.
Use change control for every construction phase
Reassess security when demolition ends, framing changes, doors or windows arrive, utilities move, cabinets block views, networks change, and final hardware is installed. The risk is not static. A temporary barrier that worked during demolition may be unsuitable after expensive appliances are delivered.
Before approving a phase change, compare the site to the register. Photograph the finished sensor and lock position, update zone names, remove superseded temporary devices, and record the tested result. Close accounts and access when the project ends
Revoke temporary alarm codes, smart-lock users, app invitations, camera shares, Wi-Fi credentials, gate codes, garage access, and physical keys. Do not assume a code stopped working because its schedule expired; test it. Remove contractor phone numbers from recovery and monitoring records unless there is a documented ongoing need.
Change any owner credential that was exposed. Review account sessions, administrator roles, recovery methods, and notification destinations. If a suspicious support call or remote-access request occurred during the project, use independent callback verification and the support scam checklist before granting access.
60-minute renovation security acceptance test
Run this test after a major phase and again before final payment. Notify the monitoring provider first when required. Use controlled events; never create smoke, fire, flooding, forced entry, or an unsafe lockout.
- Minutes 0–10 — records and users: Compare the live system to the renovation register. Verify owner, administrator, contractor, household, recovery, and monitoring contacts. Confirm temporary access has the intended schedule and permissions.
- Minutes 10–20 — openings and locks: Test every affected door and window from fully closed through the smallest opening that should create an event. Check lock alignment, physical-key fallback, keypad or code access, and the difference between closed and locked state.

- Minutes 50–60 — restoration: Re-enable intended automations, remove test users and bypasses, inspect water and life-safety status, confirm monitoring is out of test mode, and save a signed result with unresolved items and owners.
A passed test means the observed result matches the written expected result. “No error appeared” is not enough. If a zone label, user, camera view, outage path, or monitoring state is unclear, keep the item open and assign a retest date.
Renovation security questions to ask
Should I give the contractor my alarm code?
Prefer a named, temporary code limited to the required hours and area. Do not share the owner master code, account password, recovery code, or smart-home administrator account. Test the temporary credential, record who has it, and revoke it when the work ends.
Can I bypass a door sensor during renovation?

What should happen to cameras while workers are present?

Do I need to tell the monitoring company?
Ask the provider. Work can create repeated alarms, supervisory events, power loss, and periods when a system is placed on test. Confirm the provider’s process, which event types are affected, when normal response resumes, and any permit or authority requirements.
How do I know the system is back to normal?
Compare it with the pre-work register and run a controlled acceptance test. Verify direct zones, locks, users, alarm modes, cameras, storage, notifications, monitoring, network and power failure behavior, environmental devices, automations, and account recovery.
