1. Confirm what the old Apple TV does

Record the exact model, serial, generation, storage, room, Home, owner, software, power source, Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection, IP reservation where used, active or standby home-hub state, Matter or Thread role on supported hardware, paired remotes, television, receiver or soundbar, HDMI port, HDMI-CEC behavior, installed security or camera apps, Home app camera access, and every security-relevant automation.

2. Build a replacement and rollback plan

Do not remove the old box first. Confirm a second eligible home hub where remote access or hub-based automations are required. Confirm a second Home administrator can recover the Home, router, cameras, alarm app, locks, monitoring contacts, subscriptions, and Apple Account without the original owner or primary phone.

  • Every resident has a physical key or approved local entry that does not depend on the Apple TV, television, remote, phone, internet, or one cloud account.
  • The alarm can arm, disarm, sound locally, and follow its documented monitoring path without a Home app automation.
  • Critical cameras have a known recording destination, retention period, playback and export path, privacy boundary, and outage state.
  • The old and replacement devices are on supported software, and the owner has saved the model, serial, purchase, warranty, and support records.
  • The network port, cable, Wi-Fi path, television, receiver, remote, and power supply for the replacement are ready but the old path remains available.
  • The rollback decision is written: when to stop, whether to reconnect the old box, and which security functions must pass before closeout.

3. Match the replacement hardware and network path

Do not buy by product name alone. Record the exact replacement model, generation, storage, Ethernet or Wi-Fi capability, supported home-hub features, supported Matter or Thread role, power, ports, remote, software support, warranty, and return window. If the old device is wired and the replacement is wireless, treat that as a network-design change and test latency, restart, interference, and outage recovery.

4. Add the replacement to the correct Home and room

Verify the Home and room before accepting defaults. Similar names can place the box in the wrong control boundary. Confirm the Apple Account, household membership, Home owner, software, location, privacy, analytics, apps, subscriptions, camera viewing, photos, media accounts, AirPlay, remote access, and automatic-update choices shown during setup.

Television and camera privacy

  1. List every camera that can appear on the television, who can trigger the view, whether alerts show when guests are present, and which rooms or exterior areas are visible.

7. Remove and reset the old Apple TV safely

Remove the old box only after the replacement, alternate hub, and required security jobs pass. Record its serial, model, room, owner, last software version, removal date, sign-out and reset procedure, physical condition, remote, cables, warranty, and final destination.
