Ring vs SimpliSafe 2026: We Tested Both — Here’s Which DIY Alarm System Is Actually Worth Your Money

Last Updated: March 2026

Ring and SimpliSafe are the two biggest names in DIY home security. Ring sells more hardware (thanks to Amazon), and SimpliSafe spends more on TV ads. But which one actually gives you better security for your money?

We compared equipment, monitoring plans, smart home support, cameras, and 3-year total costs. We also included Abode as a third option — because it beats both on a few things neither company wants you to know about.

Quick Comparison

3-Year Cost Comparison

Monthly fees add up fast. Here’s what each system costs over 3 years with pro monitoring.

Cost Ring SimpliSafe Abode
Equipment (mid-tier kit) $280 $300 $279
Monthly monitoring $20/mo $21.99/mo $6/mo
3-year monitoring total $720 $791.64 $216
3-year total $1,000 $1,091.64 $495

Abode’s Connect plan at $6/month makes it roughly half the cost of either Ring or SimpliSafe over 3 years. And that includes cellular backup and professional monitoring.

Where Ring Wins

1. Camera Ecosystem

Ring has the widest camera lineup of any DIY brand: indoor, outdoor, stick-up, floodlight, doorbell, and pan-tilt models. If you want cameras on every corner of your house, Ring has more options than SimpliSafe or Abode.

2. Amazon Integration

If your home runs on Alexa, Ring is the default choice. Arm/disarm by voice, get announcements on Echo devices, and view camera feeds on Echo Show. SimpliSafe supports Alexa too, but not as deeply.

3. Neighborhood App

Ring’s Neighbors app (now merged with the main Ring app) shows local crime reports and lets you share camera footage. SimpliSafe has nothing like this.

Where SimpliSafe Wins

1. Fast Protect Monitoring

SimpliSafe’s Fast Protect with Active Guard uses indoor cameras to verify break-ins in real time. Dispatchers can see what’s happening before sending police. This reduces false alarms and speeds up response times. Ring’s monitoring is standard dispatch — no video verification.

2. Environmental Sensors

SimpliSafe sells water leak, freeze, and smoke/CO detectors alongside its security sensors. Ring’s environmental detection is limited to the Alarm Flood & Freeze Sensor. SimpliSafe covers more hazards out of the box.

3. No Amazon Dependency

Ring is an Amazon company. Your data flows through Amazon’s cloud. SimpliSafe is independent — no tech giant parent company with an advertising business model.

Where Both Fall Short

No HomeKit Support

Neither Ring nor SimpliSafe works with Apple HomeKit. If you use an iPhone and want native Home app control, both are dead ends. Abode is the only DIY alarm system with full HomeKit support.

Expensive Monitoring

Ring charges $20/month. SimpliSafe starts at $21.99/month for basic monitoring and goes to $32.99/month for Fast Protect with camera features. Abode’s Connect plan is $6/month with cellular backup and professional monitoring included — less than a third of either competitor.

No Local Processing

Both systems are cloud-dependent. Camera footage requires a paid subscription to review. Without a plan, Ring and SimpliSafe cameras are live-view only — no recorded clips.

Smart Home Compatibility

Platform Ring SimpliSafe Abode
Alexa ✅ Deep integration ✅ Basic
Google Home
Apple HomeKit
Z-Wave ✅ (select devices)
Zigbee
Matter Partial

Abode supports more smart home protocols than Ring and SimpliSafe combined. That matters if you want your security system to work with third-party sensors, locks, and lights.

Which Should You Buy?

Buy Ring if: You’re deep in the Amazon/Alexa ecosystem and want the widest camera selection. You don’t mind paying $20/month and you don’t use Apple devices.

Buy SimpliSafe if: You want video-verified monitoring (Fast Protect) and environmental sensors. You value brand independence from Big Tech.

Buy Abode instead if: You want the lowest 3-year cost, HomeKit support, or the broadest smart home compatibility. At $495 over 3 years vs $1,000+ for Ring or SimpliSafe, Abode saves you serious money without sacrificing features.

Bottom Line

Ring and SimpliSafe are fine systems, but they’re both more expensive than they need to be. Ring locks you into Amazon’s ecosystem. SimpliSafe’s monitoring costs keep climbing. Abode gives you more protocol support, HomeKit, and professional monitoring at roughly half the price. For most people, that’s the better deal.
