Your home security system protects you from break-ins. But who protects your security system from hackers? As smart cameras, sensors, and locks connect to your Wi-Fi, they become targets. Ring had unauthorized access incidents. Eufy cameras streamed to strangers. Wyze sat on a data breach for years.
This guide covers how to lock down your home network and every connected device on it.
Why Home Cybersecurity Matters for Security System Owners
| Incident | Year | What Happened |
|---|---|---|
| Ring camera hacks | 2019-2020 | Credential stuffing let strangers talk through indoor cameras. FTC fined Ring $5.8M. |
| Eufy cloud upload | 2022 | Cameras marketed as local only uploaded thumbnails to AWS. Some users saw strangers feeds. |
| Wyze data breach | 2023 | 13,000 users received thumbnails from other cameras. Wyze initially blamed AWS. |
| ADT technician access | 2020 | ADT employee accessed 200+ customer camera feeds over 4 years using his own email. |
None of these were sophisticated attacks. Reused passwords, unpatched firmware, and poor company practices did the damage.
8 Steps to Secure Your Home Network and Devices
1. Change Your Router Default Password and SSID
Factory router credentials are published online. Change both the admin password and the Wi-Fi network name. Use WPA3 if your router supports it; WPA2-AES at minimum.
2. Create a Separate IoT Network
Most modern routers support guest networks or VLANs. Put all smart home devices on a separate network from your computers and phones. If a camera gets compromised, it cannot reach your laptop.
3. Enable Two-Factor Authentication on Every Account
| Platform | 2FA Available? | Method |
|---|---|---|
| Abode | Yes | App-based (TOTP) |
| Ring | Yes (mandatory) | SMS or app-based |
| SimpliSafe | Yes | SMS |
| Nest/Google | Yes | Google Authenticator or security key |
| Wyze | Yes | SMS or TOTP |
| Eufy | No | N/A – a reason to be cautious |
4. Use Unique Passwords for Every Security Account
The Ring hacks were credential stuffing – attackers tried email/password combos leaked from other sites. Use a password manager (1Password, Bitwarden, Apple Keychain) and never reuse passwords across security accounts.
5. Keep Firmware Updated
Camera and hub firmware patches fix known vulnerabilities. Enable auto-updates when available. Check manually once a month for devices that do not auto-update.
6. Disable UPnP on Your Router
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) lets devices open ports automatically – convenient but dangerous. Disable it. If a camera needs external access, use the manufacturers cloud relay instead of direct port forwarding.
7. Choose Local Processing When Possible
| Storage Type | Privacy Level | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Local only | Highest | Reolink NVR, eufy HomeBase, Home Assistant |
| HomeKit Secure Video | High | Abode + HKSV cameras, Eve, Logitech Circle View |
| Cloud (encrypted) | Medium | Ring E2EE, Arlo |
| Cloud (standard) | Lower | Ring (default), Nest, SimpliSafe, Wyze |
Our full camera privacy guide ranks every brand.
8. Audit Connected Device Access Regularly
Check who has access to your security app. Remove ex-partners, old roommates, contractors. Review shared user lists on Ring, Abode, and SimpliSafe every quarter.
Which Security Systems Are Safest From Hacking?
| System | 2FA | Local Processing | E2EE | HomeKit | Track Record |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Abode | Yes | Hub processes locally | Via HKSV | Yes | No known breaches |
| Ring | Yes (mandatory) | No | Optional | No | FTC fine, credential stuffing |
| SimpliSafe | Yes | No | No | No | 2019 signal replay flaw (patched) |
| Nest/Google | Yes | Some on-device AI | No | No | Nest Secure hidden mic, data practices |
| Eufy | No | Claimed local, proven cloud | No | Limited | 2022 cloud upload scandal |
Abode scores highest because its hub processes alarm events locally (not cloud-dependent), supports HomeKit Secure Video for end-to-end encrypted camera storage, and has no history of data breaches or unauthorized access.
FAQ
Can hackers disable my security system remotely?
It depends on the system. Cloud-only systems can be disrupted by internet outage or account compromise. Systems with cellular backup (Abode, SimpliSafe, Ring with Pro plan) maintain monitoring even if Wi-Fi is cut. Z-Wave/Zigbee sensors communicate directly with the hub – they do not use Wi-Fi at all.
Is Wi-Fi jamming a real threat?
Wi-Fi jammers exist and cost under $50. They can block Wi-Fi cameras and cloud communication. Defense: use a system with cellular backup and sensors that use RF (Z-Wave/Zigbee), not Wi-Fi. See our no-WiFi security guide.
Should I cover my indoor cameras?
If you are uncomfortable with always-on indoor cameras, use them only when away (Abode geofencing automates this). Or use motion sensors instead of indoor cameras – same intrusion detection, zero video privacy risk.
What is the most private security camera setup?
Local NVR storage (Reolink) with no cloud account, or HomeKit Secure Video through Abode + Apple. Both keep footage off third-party servers entirely.
