Quick answer: decide which door actually needs access control

Start with the job. If the outer door is only an insect screen, automating it may add little value. If it is a steel security door that stays locked, it is a separate access barrier and must be treated as its own opening. If deliveries, children, carers, or guests need to pass through both doors, one smart lock may not solve the whole arrival path.

  • Main door only: usually the simplest path for remote access, audit history, and temporary codes.
  • Security door only: viable only when the exact lock body, cylinder, stile, swing, and clearances are supported.
  • Both doors: creates two batteries, two failure modes, and two actions for every arrival.

Write the intended daily state before buying anything: which door is locked when people are home, asleep, away, receiving a delivery, or evacuating. That simple table often exposes a bad two-lock workflow.

Identify the outer door and lock family

Do not rely on “screen door” as a hardware description. Photograph the inside and outside of the door, the edge, the strike, the hinges, the frame, and the gap between doors. Then identify the mechanism.

Measure in millimetres and keep the photos beside the numbers. A paper template from the exact product manual is more useful than a marketplace compatibility claim.

Why outward-opening doors change the risk

Storm and security doors often swing outward. That puts hinge hardware and the closer on the exposed side and changes how the door meets the strike. A smart motor does not strengthen hinges, keep a latch engaged, or stop a poorly anchored frame from moving.

Three realistic smart-lock paths

1. Put the smart lock on the main entry door

This is the default recommendation. Standard residential doors have a larger product pool, clearer templates, and easier service. Current examples such as the Yale Assure Lock 2 and Schlage Encode Plus publish their own specifications and installation material. Their existence does not prove they fit your opening; compare the exact manual with your measurements.

The outer door then needs a deliberate rule. It can remain unlocked only during expected access windows, use a conventional keyed latch, or be held open while a verified guest arrives. Avoid permanently weakening a security door just to make remote entry convenient.

2. Use a supported retrofit on the existing security-door mechanism

A retrofit can preserve the exterior cylinder or handle, but only when the manufacturer names the exact lock family. Confirm whether the device turns a cylinder, a thumbturn, or a spindle; whether the handle must be lifted first; and whether the lock reports the door position or only the bolt state.

Ask the lock or door manufacturer in writing:

  • Is this lock case and cylinder supported?
  • Does the smart device operate every locking point?
  • What minimum interior clearance is required?
  • Is the exterior component rated for the door’s weather exposure?
  • Does the modification affect the door warranty, fire rating, or security certification?
  • What is the manual-egress path when batteries, the app, or the network fail?

3. Replace the complete lockset with a purpose-built narrow-stile model

This can work on some metal security doors, but it is closer to door hardware work than a consumer deadbolt swap. The preparation, lock case, cylinder, strike, wiring or batteries, and code requirements all matter. Use a locksmith or door specialist familiar with the exact door system. Do not enlarge a metal stile until the manufacturer confirms the preparation.

Multipoint locks need a complete-motion test

Many security doors require the handle to be lifted before the key can complete the lock cycle. A motor that turns only the cylinder may not lift hooks or shoot bolts. It can report “locked” while the physical door is not fully secured, or it can stall against a mechanism that was never engaged.

Test the sequence with the door open, then closed:

  1. Close the door normally without pushing or lifting it.
  2. Operate the handle as the manufacturer requires.
  3. Lock and unlock from inside and outside.
  4. Pull and push at the top, middle, and bottom while locked.
  5. Repeat after the door has been in sun or rain, when expansion can change alignment.

Weather, heat, mesh, and radio placement

An exterior keypad may sit behind mesh but still receive rain, condensation, salt air, dust, and direct sun. Confirm the exact environmental rating and approved temperature range. Do not assume that an indoor motor is protected just because it faces the gap between doors; that cavity can become hot and damp.

Metal mesh and frames can also change radio performance. Pairing successfully at the workbench does not prove reliable operation after installation. Test from the hub or router location with both doors closed and with the household’s normal Wi-Fi traffic running.

Emergency egress comes before remote access

Every resident should be able to leave without finding a phone, waiting for a cloud service, or remembering a guest code. Local rules differ, so check the door and lock instructions plus any applicable building, rental, strata, fire, or insurance requirements. If the outer door needs a key for exit, understand where the key is kept and whether that arrangement is lawful and safe.

Run an exit drill in darkness. Include children, older adults, and anyone with limited hand strength. A lock that is convenient for the installer but confusing for the household is not ready.
