Most home security companies want $20-$35/month for features that used to be free. Cloud storage, app alerts, even arming your own system sometimes requires a paid plan. But a few brands still let you run a full security setup without paying a cent per month.
We tested the best no-subscription home security systems — cameras, alarms, and sensors that work out of the box with zero monthly fees. Here’s what actually delivers without a recurring bill.
What “No Subscription” Really Means
No-subscription means the system works fully without monthly payments. You still pay for equipment upfront, but there’s no cloud fee, no monitoring fee, and no feature lockout. Some brands offer optional paid plans if you want extras like professional monitoring or extended cloud storage, but the core system runs independently.
This is different from “no contract” — SimpliSafe and Ring are no-contract, but their systems lose most functionality without a $20+/month plan.
Best No-Subscription Systems (2026)
1. Abode — Best Overall No-Subscription Alarm
| Equipment | $199–$399 (Smart Security Kit) |
| Free tier | Full app control, automation, arm/disarm, alerts, timeline |
| Optional plans | Connect $6/mo, Connect+ $12/mo, Pro $20/mo |
| Smart home | HomeKit, Alexa, Google, Z-Wave, Zigbee, Matter |
| Local processing | ✅ Yes |
Abode is the standout here. The free tier gives you complete app control, real-time alerts, automation rules, and a full event timeline. No other alarm system offers this much at $0/month. You can add professional monitoring for $6/month if you want it, but the system is genuinely useful without it.
Abode is also the only alarm system with Apple HomeKit support, plus Z-Wave and Zigbee for third-party sensors and locks.
2. eufy — Best No-Subscription Cameras
| Equipment | $30–$200 per camera |
| Free tier | Local storage, AI detection, app alerts, live view |
| Optional plans | Cloud backup $3–$10/mo |
| Smart home | Alexa, Google (no HomeKit) |
| Local storage | ✅ Built-in or HomeBase |
eufy cameras store footage locally — no subscription needed for recording, playback, or AI person detection. The S3 Pro shoots 4K with on-device AI. The tradeoff: eufy had a privacy scandal in 2022 where unencrypted streams were accessible. They’ve since patched it, but it’s worth knowing.
eufy discontinued its alarm system, so this is cameras only. Pair with Abode for a complete no-subscription setup.
3. Reolink — Best No-Subscription Outdoor Cameras
| Equipment | $50–$250 per camera |
| Free tier | Local storage (microSD/NVR), app alerts, AI detection |
| Optional plans | Cloud backup $5–$10/mo |
| Smart home | Alexa, Google |
| Local storage | ✅ microSD + optional NVR |
Reolink makes PoE (wired) and WiFi cameras with local storage via microSD or their NVR units. No subscription needed for any feature. The Argus 4 Pro shoots 4K with color night vision. For anyone building a multi-camera system, their 8-channel NVR kits start around $400 and store weeks of footage locally.
4. Wyze — Cheapest No-Subscription Option (With Caveats)
| Equipment | $20–$100 per camera |
| Free tier | Live view, basic motion alerts, 12-second clips |
| Optional plans | Cam Plus $2–$4/mo, HMS $10/mo |
| Smart home | Alexa, Google |
| Local storage | ✅ microSD (continuous recording) |
Wyze cameras record to microSD cards without a subscription. But the free tier limits cloud clips to 12 seconds with a 5-minute cooldown. For full-length cloud recordings and AI detection (person, pet, package), you need Cam Plus at $2–$4/month per camera. Still cheap, but not truly subscription-free for cloud features.
Systems That Claim “No Subscription” But Aren’t
Ring
Ring cameras are live-view only without a plan. No recorded clips, no person detection, no shared users. The $20/month Ring Protect Pro plan is essentially required. Not a real no-subscription option.
SimpliSafe
SimpliSafe’s free tier lets you arm/disarm via the keypad only. No app control, no alerts on your phone, no camera recording. You need the $21.99+/month plan for basic app functionality. Not genuinely free.
Arlo
Arlo cameras record nothing without a subscription (unless you own the legacy SmartHub with USB storage). The $8–$18/month Arlo Secure plan is mandatory for most users.
Best No-Subscription Combo
For a complete home security setup with zero monthly fees:
- Alarm: Abode Smart Security Kit ($279) — full app control, automation, HomeKit
- Indoor cameras: eufy Indoor Mini ($30 each) — local storage, AI detection
- Outdoor cameras: Reolink Argus 4 Pro ($130 each) — 4K, color night vision, solar panel option
- Total upfront: ~$470 for alarm + 2 indoor + 1 outdoor camera
- Monthly cost: $0
Compare that to Ring ($280 equipment + $240/year) or SimpliSafe ($300 equipment + $264/year). After 2 years, the no-subscription setup saves you $500+.
Bottom Line
You don’t need to pay $20–$35/month for home security. Abode gives you a real alarm system at $0/month. eufy and Reolink give you camera footage stored locally. The upfront cost is similar to Ring or SimpliSafe, but you stop paying after day one.
