1. Make the property safe before troubleshooting

Confirm whether the opening is actually secure. If there are signs of forced entry, broken glass, smoke, water, an unsafe person, or another emergency, leave the area and follow the emergency plan. Do not stand in a doorway or disable the alarm to diagnose a possible intrusion.

If professional monitoring is active, use the provider’s approved test procedure before creating signals. Record the test start, expected duration, verbal passcode or account process, and the step required to leave test mode. A local app toggle may not place the monitoring account in provider-approved test status.

2. Identify the exact zone and device

Write down the zone name, number, device model, location, mounting type, battery type, last known good event, and whether the warning appears on the keypad, hub, app, monitoring portal, or more than one place. Open and close the suspected entry while watching the event history. A label such as “Back Door” is not proof that the physical device is on the back door.

  • Confirm one sensor at a time so two nearby contacts are not confused.
  • Check whether the device is a surface contact, recessed contact, wired loop, tilt sensor, vibration sensor, or another zone type.
  • Photograph the mounting and alignment before changing anything.
  • Record recent work: painting, weather sealing, battery replacement, firmware update, cleaning, new metal hardware, door adjustment, or a moved hub.

3. Check the door or window before the electronics

A sensor cannot correct a door that does not close consistently. Close the opening normally without pushing, lifting, slamming, or holding it. Check the latch, hinges, frame, weather strip, window lock, and any point where the panel moves after it appears closed. Repeat the check at the top, middle, and bottom of the opening.

7. Treat metal, weather, and long range as design variables

Metal doors, foil-backed insulation, masonry, detached buildings, and large appliances can change radio behavior. Temperature can move frames and adhesive. Moisture can damage a device that is not rated for the location. Record the conditions rather than assuming a random intermittent fault.

For an exterior gate, shed, or detached garage, verify the exact sensor’s environmental rating and radio path. Test with the gate at normal closed tension and during the conditions that caused the fault. A dry indoor bench test cannot prove an outdoor installation.
